Analysis of multivariate genotype - environment data using Nonlinear Canonical Correlation Analysis Organic Eprints
Pinnschmidt, H.O..
Nonlinear Canonical Correlation Analysis (NCCA) is a method well suited for visualising the main features in multivariate data of various scales. NCCA is useful for obtaining an overall orientation of genotype properties and environment characteristics.

Approaches for field assessment of resistance to leaf pathogens in spring barley varieties Organic Eprints
Pinnschmidt, H.O.; Hovmøller, M.S.; Østergård, H..
The resistance of spring barley varieties to powdery mildew, leaf rust, leaf scald and net blotch was characterized by using results from inoculated small-plot nurseries and larger survey plots subject to natural infection. The experiments were conducted in different environments. Both trial types often yielded complementary results with respect to the ranking of varieties suggesting that a recommended variety characterization should include both naturally infected survey-type trials and nursery trials in which the most relevant pathogen isolates and/or isolate mixtures or populations are used for inoculation. Average and median values of the diseased leaf area of a variety were highly correlated with each other and with the genotype main effect determined...

Compensating damage effects of seed-borne Fusarium culmorum and Microdochium nivale in winter wheat by increased seeding rates Organic Eprints
Pinnschmidt, H.O.; Justesen, A.F..
Fusarium culmorum and Microdochium nivale are considered important seed-borne diseases of wheat in Denmark. Their damage effects consist in reducing seed germination and plant emergence which leads to reduced plant density, panicle numbers/area and yield. The aim of this study is to find out whether and to what degree these damage effects can be compensated by increased seeding rates. A trial was therefore conducted in 2004 in which seed lots of three winter wheat varities (Ritmo, Bill and Boston) having various degrees of infection by F. culmorum and Microdochium nivale were sown at various seeding rates. Seed contamination of the two pathogens was determined by counting the number of discoloured roots in the seed batches (Doyer method). Plant emergence...

Molecular diagnostic methods can prevent unnecessary rejection of organic seed lots Organic Eprints
Justesen, A.F.; Pinnschmidt, H.O.; Hansen, H.J..
In some years, large amounts of organic seed lots are discarded due to the presence of high levels of seed-borne diseases. In barley it is especially the presence of the fungal species Pyrenophora teres (barley net blotch) and P. graminea (barley leaf stripe), which causes rejection of seed lots. A real-time PCR method for detection and quantification of P. graminea has been developed.

October. Desuden...

Predicting spring barley yield from variety-specific yield potential, disease resistance and straw length, and from environment-specific disease loads and weed pressure Organic Eprints
Østergård, H.; Kristensen, K.; Pinnschmidt, H.O.; Hansen, P.K.; Hovmøller, M.S..
Abstract For low-input crop production, well-characterised varieties increase the possibilities of managing diseases and weeds. This analysis aims at developing a framework for analyzing grain yield using external varietal information about disease resistance, weed competitiveness and yield potential and quantifying the impact of susceptibility grouping and straw length scores (as a measure for weed competitiveness) for predicting spring barley grain yield under variable biotic stress levels. The study comprised 52 spring barley varieties and 17 environments, i.e., combinations of location, growing system and year. Individual varieties and their interactions with environments were analysed by factorial regression of grain yield on external variety...

Quantitative relationships in the infection cycle of seed-borne net blotch Organic Eprints
Pinnschmidt, H.O.; Nielsen, B.J.; Hansen, H.J..
Seed-borne net blotch is a threat to organic barley seed production in Denmark because it often exceeds the recommended 15% contamination threshold in barley seed lots. This threatens the supply of organic barley growers with organically produced healthy barley seeds. The ORGSEED project aims at quantifying the links between initial seed contamination, primary seedling infection, disease severity during the growing season, yield parameters and new contamination of the harvested grains to improve decision support for handling net blotch contaminations in organic barley- and barley seed production. The harvested grains of spring barley varieties grown at several sites in Denmark in 2002 and 2003 were used as seed lots in subsequent trials in 2003 and 2004....

Simultaneous epidemic development of scald and net blotch on single leaf layers of a spring barley crop Organic Eprints
Vollmer, J.H.; Pinnschmidt, H.O.; Munk, L.; Østergård, H..
Background and objectives Two pathogens growing on the same leaf compete for the same resources, i.e. space and plant nutrients. This may lead to density dependent disease development. The pathogens may also influence each other directly such that the influence of one on the other is more complex than a simple function of the area of the other pathogen. Different interaction types are, for example, competition, mutualism and exploitation. The importance of such interactions for epidemics of simultaneously occurring pathogens has received little attention. The objective of this study is to investigate the simultaneous epidemic development of Rhynchosporium secalis (causing scald) and Drechslera teres (causing net blotch) on spring barley under field...

Skadetærskler for bygbladplet, stribesyge og spiringsfusariose Organic Eprints
Pinnschmidt, H.O..
